Captricity Announces HIPAA Compliance
September 17, 2013 by webmaster
We are pleased to announce that a recent external review has asserted that Captricity is 100% HIPAA compliant. This is a big moment for us and in many ways brings us full circle, from our roots in rural health clinics in Africa to our current mission to serve the data capture needs of healthcare practitioners worldwide.
At Captricity, we understand that personal health information is highly sensitive and personal. All of the data we digitize is secure and protected. We have built systems and implemented policies that ensure that all the data we capture is yours and yours alone. With HIPAA certification, we can now help even more members of the healthcare community to achieve the benefits of digital information.
What is HIPAA Compliance?
HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, was passed in 1996. Among other things, HIPAA establishes security and privacy standards for the use and disclosure of “protected health information” (PHI) to ensure that your health providers keep your data safe. If your health provider uses a third-party service like Captricity, that service has to validate that measures are in place to ensure that all PHI in the system remains secure and private. Compliance includes an exhaustive checklist and audit of physical and technical safeguards, audit reports, technical policies and network security.
Why does HIPAA matter?
Achieving HIPAA compliance is not an easy feat, but it is one that we undertook happily. Why? At Captricity, we understand firsthand thebenefits of giving medical and public health practitioners, policymakers and patients rapid access to high quality data. Captricity was designed to extract HIV/AIDS health information from logbooks compiled by rural health workers. The goals of these workers is not very different from those of our current US-based customers -- digitizing sensitive information ranging from health records and DNA testing to prescriptions, patient care surveys and medical order forms. HIPAA compliance ensures that the organizations we serve can benefit from our data capture technology with full confidence that their data is safe with us.
Stories from the Field
For a number of our healthcare customers, HIPAA compliance offers validation that our service is highly secure and protected.
- Integra Partners, a rapidly-growing network manager, operates systems that connect providers of orthotics, prosthetics and medical equipment to health plans and patients. Integra works with Captricity to extract order information and import it into their Salesforce system, which automatically triggers product deliveries and partner notifications. While the ease and efficiency Captricity delivers were must-haves for Integra, they alone were not sufficient. The protection of sensitive and personal data is also a critical requirement, as the Integra forms contain sensitive patient information. They need to protect that information while maintaining high levels of accuracy in the output.
- Catapult Health, a mobile clinic provider, offers 30-minute appointment workplace exams that include a panel of basic tests, a full personal health report and an action plan to help them improve their health. After each visit, Catapult generates detailed reports on employee health and patient satisfaction report. We work with Catapult to quickly digitize these reports.
